the fundació centre del vidre de barcelona

is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the glassmaking arts and its artgallery espai vidre promotes contemporary glass art. apart from presenting exhibitions throughout the year, espai vidre executes projects in glass, from the design stage right through to execution. the gallery espai vidre is located in downtown barcelona, close to the contemporary art museum

alex año fröhlich

the concept of working with series allows me to experiment with modification of existing materials, to work with repetitive but different operations, contrasting textures, colors and transparencies. I have experimented how two forms can be related and produce a completely new element.


pilar aldana-mendéz

the desert is a perfect place, where lonely souls can express themselves with total freedom. perhaps do we need to escape from the world, if we want to be, for a while, ourselves. the desert deserves to be called: the great refuge.


philippa beveridge

glass is my chosen medium for expressing the recurring themes in my work: past and present, conscious and subconscious, fragility and strength and, most importantly, memory. its plasticity enables me to conceal or reveal selected aspects of the work, to play with the object and its shadow, and to diffuse or focus the gaze of the onlooker


joaquim falco

I do a house. it is small. it does not have doors nor windows. only light can go in and out. I do another one. I drill it. when I finish it I patch it with cork stoppers.


sandra moneny

the material base of my work is the pure object. the object as memory of an experience, a document. some time ago I heard someone saying “perhaps, like the tales, the work of art is nothing and contains all”. the popular tale is auratic, like the object, able to reconstruct a personal history and became in its report.
the central point of my technical search with glass, is to express the light in other forms, to change its appearance and to go from the most fragile to the most solid, to allow the transparence or to negate it.
I am interested and I believe in the force of the impact in the simple object too.

to freeze a memory...
to have time to save it, to keep it...
to freeze a dream...
to have time to dream, to look, to touch and not to be trapped by memories...
to avoid reliving by them, that they remain inert in our memory, not in the forgotten past...
to freeze and enclose within a vitreous mass, installed in our remembrance.

each day they come, come back.
I don’t remember the first day nor I’ll see the last they appear behind the glasses and when I want to see them closer then they dissapear leaving behind them a trace of light.

david balsells

is a paragdigma of the attitude: a true artist attemps art with modesty.
from little pieces full inside with liquid circular enigmas and full of expectations, his glass pieces grew up gradually with time and experience.
he is young but in the process of becoming an artist, he is building up his personal language and he is fortunate of being involved in major projects of glass sculpture.


julia castro

has always been anxious to dominate the artistic techniques for bronze, stone…and when she faces glass, she discovers the magical world of this material, solid and at the same time transparent. the quality of water crystallizes in glass. glass produces the effect of humidity, gives a wet sensation…although in “waters” language these are vains, reflections, shines and shimmerings.
no wonder that, between her glass collections, the “aljibes” are pieces full of qualities of those greenish mosses from muddy waters that lie in her memory and not causally take the round shapes of cisterns when she works with glass.


anna marco

her work deals with progressions: numerical, formal, textural cyclical. symbolic geometrical shapes protect an organic internal part capturing the spontaneity of a past gesture and leading the spectator into a sensitive world.


marta de paz

if we had to point out one subject that we can find around the glass pieces of this most promising spanish artist, we could say the moon. maybe persuasion is the word to use, maybe it is attraction, but it is a fact, that, in front of a moon sculpture of her, we feel the gravity of our existence.


javier perez blanco

understands sculpture as an action that shapes an intuitive acknowledgement in a precise space and moment.
given that only action is present, he attains in locating his sculpture continuously in the present, creating art-facts and installations used as a tool or as a scenario for developing the interpretative action.


alex reig

la presence de l’absence. alex reig nous offre la possibilité d’explorer les origines de sa pensée; il cherche inlassablemente à dépouiller l’espace des éléments accessoires qui nous étouffent pour nour transporter à l’origine de l’être humain, en notre intimité, limpide, profonde, vierge.
le feu, purificateur et dévastateur est le créateur de la matière avec laquelle il construit une grande partie de son oeuvre: le feu et le verre.
il lutte contre la nature pour en construire une nouvelle, qui lui appartiendrait. il réordonne les éléments, trouve le hazard prémédité. il en résulte un équilibre de forces: la naissance de la réhabitation.

is a self made artist. he works with differnt materials searching for the energy they have related with the environment.


montserrat sarmiento

her work is silent to the point that we are obliged to awaken from the hypnosis into which we fall on contemplating her pieces, and to ask ourselves just how such silence and simplicity can be attained.
standing before her sculptures, the sensation we have is of being in front of a mirror and not seeing ourselves reflected: there is an upsurge of questions, of anxiety, of fear and, finally, that revealing silence.
she brings wisdom to the art of glasswork, through her aesthetics and through the finish she achieves with her sculptures. she has a place both in the world of contemporary art as well as in the world of glasswork.


kazue taguchi

this young artist began by creating a fantastic installation with thousands of glass bottles over an artificial lake, drawing everyone’s attention to her. her way of articulating references to both oriental and western cultures is simply breathtaking.
her latest work investigates the architecture of le corbusier. she uses glass in her sculptures as a basic building material, but then blends it with other materials, she includes japanese rice paper within the glass, she manages to make us see the work in a different manner; she forces us to seek out new perspectives.


monika uz

is emphatic as an artist, clear and direct. her work is filled with transparent, contorted glass that freezes delicate movement in the air. at other times, she exudes 'savoir faire' with her colourist work, daring and urbane, whose aim is both to turn design on its head and to celebrate her deep-running barcelona roots.
but sometimes we can go further even than that, taking pleasure in her more intimate side as an artist, expressed in the way she includes metal within her glasswork, and in the range of colour and textures that stir up the emotions, alerting us to the fact that she herself is glass-like and fragile.
